Job Description

Complies with all state, system, and university policies, regulations, rules, procedures, guidelines, and directives in a timely manner and adhere to confidentiality policies (FERPA). Performs other duties as assigned. This is an in-office position located in Stephenville, TX Must be able to work remotely at the request of the University. Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA)

Responsibilities:

Advising Students: Provides academic advising for students identified as military veterans as well as other identified populations grounded in tenets of practice outlined by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) and appropriate academic advising and student development theories. Advises for course selection, registration, academic planning, career and educational goal-setting, appropriate resources, transitioning to the university, and retention issues. Advises in both group and individual settings with current and prospective students. Interprets State, University, and college policies and procedures. Maintains accurate records of student contacts; may assist in the development of systems, processes, or policies for maintaining records of student contacts.

Student Success & Retention: Monitors academic progress and implements intervention strategies for students who receive academic alerts or who need assistance in maintaining or improving their academic standing. Promotes student learning, development, and personal growth to empower self-sufficiency. Provides students with proactive referrals to appropriate resources and timely reminders, and other targeted individual and group communications using email, texting, and social media. Manages/coordinates advising projects, events, outreach, and interventions for all students. Actively seeks to identify individual, organizational, and environmental conditions that foster or inhibit student success.

Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the Division of Global, Community, and First-Gen Initiatives on strategic veteran support initiatives, Office of Veteran Services, and other areas to stay abreast of rules, regulations, and military support services for veteran students. Collaborates with campus partners in designing and implementing strategic, campus-wide programs and initiatives to support student retention and degree completion goals. Seeks opportunities to serve on committees to advocate for and contribute ideas to promote a positive student experience across campus initiatives. Conducts research on best practices and theory within the field of academic advising, students in transition, and related topics to foster professional growth and improve the student advising experience.

Reporting: May provide reports and data analysis of advising initiatives for military veteran students and other special populations.

Training & Supervision: Develop ongoing training for faculty and staff on advising practices and implications for our military veterans.

Preferred Qualifications: Four years’ experience working with veterans in an academic setting or in veteran support programs. Military veteran status with firsthand understanding of student veterans’ experiences, needs and challenges.

Minimum Qualifications: Four years’ experience working in academic advising, or other student support roles within higher education. Bachelor’s degree in applicable field; master's degree serving as a substitute for up to two years of the required experience.

The target base annual salary is $42,000 and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
