Job Description

This position is connected with a USDA grant project which is focused on expanding STEM fields into rural schools in the Texas Panhandle through the use of hydrologic sciences. The idea is that hydrology is very important for many aspects of agriculture, and connecting this STEM field to agriculture, something which many in rural schools will already have an interest, will prod students to develop greater interest in STEM generally. The responsibilities of this position is for a 6-12 grade existing teachers at an area school to work with faculty and a graduate student to development curricula which is connected with hydrologic sciences, find existing activities in this field, and help us design a means to make it efficient for teachers in rural schools to use that curriculum in their existing classes. They will help other teachers to learn these tools and help us evaluate pilot demonstration of the activities in actual classrooms.

*This is a temporary position for the months of May-June*

Responsibilities:

  • Practice K-12 hydrologic science activities using physical supplies and experimentation, software mock-ups, and live demonstrations with project team.
  • Perform background research on existing STEM activities available in K-12 settings connected with hydrologic sciences.
  • Write up new educational activities connected with hydrologic sciences in consultation with project PIs and a graduate student worker.
  • Learn the basics of many important aspects of hydrologic science including hydrology, hydraulics, water quality, and water economics.
  • Other duties may be assigned

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) year’s teaching in middle or high school in a STEM related class.
  • Texas Teaching Certificate
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Knowledge of education curriculum development
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a STEM field
  • Experience teaching in a science or engineering field in grades 6-12
  • Knowledge of web or software application development. Digital computational abilities (Excel, MatLab, Python, R, statistical software).
  • Looking for candidates with a passion for STEM education and a commitment to empowering young women.
